Traveling to Cancun, Mexico? To get the most out of your trip, you’ll want to be prepared for all the city and surrounding region have to offer. In this guide, our travel experts here at Cancun Adventures cover 5 Cancun travel tips you need to know. Read on to learn more, and book your next Cancun adventure with our award-winning tour team today!

Prepare for the Sun

One of the most omnipresent features in Cancun, and one that many travelers underestimate is the sun. Cancun is blessed with warm weather and sunny days year-round. It’s also home to several breathtaking beaches, resorts, and other seaside environments to explore. These two factors lead to most visitors spending the bulk of their time outdoors. Without proper sun protection, sunburns are bound to happen. Pack extra sunscreen (and make sure it’s water resistant) to prepare for sunny days in Cancun.

Be Wise About Water

When swimming in the water, it is important to always use waterproof sunscreen. Sunscreen that is not waterproof will quickly wash off in the water and leave you exposed to the sun’s harmful rays. Also, be sure that you, your family, and your friends are strong swimmers before getting in the water in Cancun. Though the Gulf’s waters are usually calm, they are still susceptible to currents and the occasional storm.

Make Smart Choices With Your Money

Traveling to any foreign country can make things more difficult as far as money is concerned. After all, there are exchange rates to worry about, as well as the overall effectiveness of “plastic” and the potential for price scams, theft, and other crimes. In Cancun, it is highly recommended to exchange your dollars for pesos in small portions. You can only use pesos in Mexico, so there is no reason to get more than you need.

When exchanging currency in Cancun or other parts of Mexico, it’s a good idea to hold on to your US dollars if the exchange rate is 10 pesos or fewer to the dollar. However, if the exchange rate is more than 10 pesos to the dollar, you’ll want to withdraw pesos from an ATM and use them instead. US dollars are also accepted in most places, but be careful carrying large amounts of American cash on you. If you’re thinking of using your credit or debit card, you’ll still want to take some cash with you wherever you go. Many establishments in Cancun do not accept credit or debit cards.

Travel With the Right Documentation

To enter Mexico, you need to obtain a Tourist Card (FMT). Though the Tourist Card is furnished by most airlines, you will still need proof of your citizenship to obtain one. Forms of accepted proof of citizenship include passports, voter’s registration cards, naturalization papers, or notarized affidavits of citizenship. A photo ID is very helpful, and a passport can serve as both proof of citizenship and a photo ID. Be sure to save the copy of the Tourist Card that is returned to you, as you must present this copy when leaving Mexico.

Plan Your Activities Ahead of Time

Cancun is one of the most popular travel destinations in the entire Western Hemisphere. Hotels, resorts, tours, and show tickets all fill up and sell out rather quickly. To ensure that you get to do the things you want to do in Cancun, you’ll want to build an itinerary and start the booking process as early as possible. Some of the most popular activities to do in Cancun include touring the Tulum ruins and caves, snorkeling in some of the region’s many cenotes and lagoons, and sailing out on the Gulf to experience the sea firsthand. Here at Cancun Adventures, we are proud to offer excellent tours that cover all of these activities. Follow the links below to learn more about some of our top Cancun tours.
